March 12, 2006 - San Felipe, Mexico
Race morning started off with a beautiful sunrise over the Sea of Cortez in downtown San Felipe, but the weather quickly changed and on depending where you were on the race course it ranged from sunny skies and a slight breeze to windy and rain and up on the Northern edge, snow. Starting 22nd out of 24 Trophy Trucks taking the green flag at 30-second intervals Scott Steinberger and Justin Harchar, in his first race as co-rider, went huge off the jumps at Zoo Road causing the standing room only crowd to roar with approval.
While charging up through the field, a nerf to a slower TT caused some damage to the hood latches forcing an unscheduled stop at race mile 55. PCI Racing Pit Captain, Matt Hendrich, and crew quickly removed the damaged front end allowing Scott and Justin to rejoin the hunt without losing a position. After passing checkpoint 1, in 13th place on corrected time, Scott put the hammer down and picked up 7 more spots arriving at race mile 93 for a planned fuel stop 6th on the road. The PCI crew performed a flawless stop dumping 45 gallons of VP Race Fuel in under 25 seconds - without losing a position. Trophy Truck #7 continued on a fast, steady pace coming out of Matomi Wash at race mile 196 as the 4th truck on the road. PCI Racing Pit Captain, Rob Bowman, and crew performed a timed fuel stop, again with no loss of race position.
At race mile, 200 things started to heat up literally. The EFI digital display showed the engine water temperature was quickly approaching damaging levels and they needed to stop. PCI chase trucks arrived quickly and started changing out the water pump, as the bid for a podium finish evaporated. In spite of the fast response and repair work by the team, the stop was costly: losing over an hour of time and 4 positions on course. At race mile 222 PCI Pit Captain, Brian Lawrence, and crew replaced a spare tire lost somewhere on Old Puertecitios Road while charging hard to make up for lost time. Crossing the finish line 5 hours 31 minutes after it all started, the PCI Team was relegated to a hard fought 8th place finish. |
